I've just spent an hour pricking out seedlings and sowing others. They're all on the windowsill in my sitting room and porch at the moment and they'll get moved around the various windowsills in the house as the sun moves around. It's not ideal but beggars can't be choosers and it's worked just fine for me for more years than I care to imagine. In another week or so I'll set the propagator going in the kitchen and by March things will really start to take off here. I was really surprised to see that the Beth Alpha cucumbers are sprouting as they've been on the windowsill in the unheated porch. They clearly don't realise that they're supposed to prefer to be somewhere warm to germinate. My Giant Prague celeriac have just germinated and I'm hoping to get much bigger roots this year. I sowed them much later last year and although the flavour has been superb they didn't really grow very big at all.

It's windowsill season
I'm going to take loads of cuttings from my house plants as I have had great success with that in the past. I've just offered Tony's colleague a swiss cheese plant cutting that was rooted last year. It is now a decent sized plant and all I did was put a stalk in a vase of water and left it to do it's thing. I'm considering doing a plant stall at a local car boot sale in the early summer as houseplants have all of a sudden become very popular and it will be a nice way to save up for a greenhouse... I'm not sure yet whether I do actually want one as the porch served us really well last year. I'll think on that one.

It won't come in wrong
DeleteGet them propagators stacked up Cherie ;) What type of peppers have you overwintered? I have a load of chillies currently sulking in my greenhouse. I brought a couple in, but Fungas Gnat was an issue, so they went back out again. Great idea on the houseplant car boot sale. The hipsters and students will love them! x
ReplyDeleteHi chuck. My overwintered peppers are long red marconi and a bell pepper grown from saved seeds.
