I've been sorting out all my seeds for next year and discovered a load of very old out of date onion seeds. It's completely the wrong time of year to think about sowing them but as I was only going to throw them out I decided to just scatter them onto some empty tubs that I have. Yesterday I had half filled the tubs with leaves and then added a good layer of compost on top. It had been my intention to just let them stand empty until next spring while the leaves break down under the compost. If the onions sprout I intend to use them kind of like chives and if they do nothing I will have added a tiny bit more organic matter to the planters. I've covered them with a sheet of corrugated roofing plastic which I have weighted down with a few really heavy bricks. I shall see if anything comes of it.
Then I decided to put the black scaffold net back on the raised beds. It's turned really cold and it might just give them a tiny bit of protection
