In order to create the veggie garden I had to dig out loads of Gladioli last year. Imagine my surprise to find that the flowers are in fact edible. This has made me research more of which flowers are edible and I am planning to create some really beautiful but edible floral displays in the veg beds this coming growing season. I still have plenty of the Gladioli in the garden and once they start growing I intend to add them to salads . We had a long season of growth with them last year and we even had some flowering in November so it's worth planting a few as an edible crop. Just pick one or two flowers from each stem and tear them into little pieces to add colour and flavour.

We always plant flowers in the veggie gardens and I alternate veggies and flowers along the fences. I had the best luck with Calendulas, which flowered from mid June through a hard frost. Of course, Nasturtiums are great bloomers and edible, and bloom contiuously. We'll start both from seed in early March.
ReplyDeleteI bet it looks really pretty when it's all in flower.
DeleteHello Cherie, I have found your gardening blog (via your other blog listed on Vix's). I too did not know Gladioli were edible! Last season I tied borage flowers in ice cubes (to have with our elderflower spritzer), they looked so pretty. A keen gardener from Cornwall, Lulu x
ReplyDeleteBorage flowers are so pretty. Do you make your own elderflower cordial? It's one of my favourite tastes of summer.
