The weather forecast last night was pretty grim so I was really surprised when the sun came out and it was pleasantly warm. I've spent a thoroughly lovely day in the garden just pottering on. Now that my craft workshop has gone there are plenty of areas to create raised beds and growing areas. I added some compost to a raised bed that I created next to the pond and made a low cloche tunnel using a sheet of corrugated plastic. It will warm the soil a degree or two ready to be planted up with salads. The pond has several large frogs in it so hopefully they will keep down the slug and snail population

When Tony came in from work he popped down into our cellar and brought a whole pile of plant trays and troughs back up for me. I must have got them out of a skip a few years ago as I know we haven't bought them. For the moment we now have a line of planting troughs along the length of the wall in front of the pond. My plan is to sow some peas for the shoots and I will fill a couple of troughs with carrots and put them up on top of the log store. Hopefully by keeping them up high it should stop any carrot fly attacking them. The strawberry planter has been emptied so that's a job for the weekend when we get some more compost. I have plenty of runners coming along nicely and they can go into the strawberry planter. I keep eyeballing the troughs and planning all manner of things to grow. It's going to be a very productive year in the garden if everything goes to plan.
With the weather turning you are making good progress in your garden. We have frogs too, but I'm not sure the one I found the other day could eat a snail, as he was only as big as my thumbnail. The pesky blackbirds help to keep our snail population down, as well as loving my blueberries.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to see the garden waking up. I am planning to put blueberries in this year but want to make a fruit cage so that the birds don't eat them all.
DeleteYour raised bed looks really happy in the sun. Great idea with the slug patrolling frogs! I'm particularly fond of toads. They are fat and sing to you :) Lulu xXx
ReplyDeleteWhat do they sing :-)
