Last year I sowed a large planting trough/tray of radishes quite late in the year. I covered the tray with a sheet of corrugated plastic and pretty much left them to get on with it. I have been adding the leaves to salads for a few weeks now and didn't really expect any actual radishes to form. I'm chuffed to bits to say I've had a couple of lovely little ones to add to Tony's packed lunch salad box and oh my are they peppery. I had heard that they wouldn't be worth eating as they might be woody but I haven't found that to be the case. I've just popped outside to pick some sprout, kale, beetroot and chard leaves to make up tomorrow's salad box and I was delighted while picking radish leaves to find a lovely little radish nestled down in the tray. It's been washed and sliced finely and tossed into the salad with some raspberry balsamic vinegar....... It doesn't come any fresher than that and there are zero food miles. Tony loves a fresh salad every day but it wouldn't even cross his mind to go and pick the salad leaves. He'd make do with a sandwich if he had to put his own lunch together ... I know how to feed my man :-)
Beetroot leaves and a jewel like radish |
Looking good, though I'm not a radish fan. I pulled a carrot over the weekend & it wasn't too bad a size, but a weeney one came out with it. I shredded the bigger one raw & put it in some potato salad & it was sweet & tasty. Take care.
ReplyDeleteHow fun...we have freezing temps still, though the greenhouse is quite warm, but chilly at night. Hubby is finishing the insulation, so maybe we can prolong growing this Fall, without a huge electric bill. Num...fresh greens, I can't wait! Sandi
