Blueberries and raspberries

While I was out shopping today I picked up some blueberry and raspberry plants.  When I got back I rigged a temporary fruit cage just in case I get any fruit this year. I do hope to make a permanent fruit cage as soon as the weather is a bit warmer but this was my 'just in case I don't get around to it' insurance.  I was hoping to buy some Oca tubers on Ebay but they are a bit expensive so I will wait and see if I can get some at one of our local garden centres. I much prefer to shop local if I can. After rigging my fruit cage I filled the newest raised bed with the mostly decomposed contents of one of my compost bins. I was amazed at just how far it went.  I mixed in a bag of bark chippings and have topped it off with shop bought compost. It can decompose over a long period of time adding all it's nutrients to the bed.   In truth, this bed is intended for next year but I am planning on sowing some shallow rooted veggies and flowers in there this year. It's just a gamble and might not pay off but nothing ventured nothing gained.

  1. Lovely! My mam brought me a bareroot blueberry plant about a month ago, which I have potted up. The tastiest blueberris I've had were growing down by Mylor Harbour. They were not at all like the supermarket ones and I couldn't believe they were happy to be salt whipped by the sea! I need to get some raspberries. Every year I say I will, then I forget. Lulu xXx

    1. I have visions of floating down the garden in my pretty summer dress to pick some fruit for breakfast. I'll need to lose a few pounds if I want to fit into the pretty summer dress though.
