Weekend away

We've been away for a few days to the gorgeous town of Lytham St Anne's to celebrate my birthday.  On our return I found a courgette that was trying to turn into a marrow while my back was turned. There's a nice little harvest of tomatoes, chillies and cucamelons but the butterflies have been laying eggs like crazy things. I've had to rub them all off the brassica leaves this afternoon. The pumpkins are looking amazing and I followed advice from the lovely gardeners on You tube and reduced the fruit to three on each plant. I'm looking forward to seeing this little beauty turn orange

On Thursday I sowed some seeds of both red and white Kohlrabi and was delighted to see that they have sprouted already. I plan to replant them in their permanent spot next week

Below is a photo of the experimental bed that I sowed earlier this year.  The radish, lettuce,  turnips and beetroot all bolted but the Kale, basil and tomatoes and cucumber are coming along a treat. There's even two parsnips in there somewhere and they are looking really strong and healthy.

The sweetpeas were a mass of blooms so I've picked two nice bunches of them. Annoyingly the kitchen counter was immediately covered in little black beetles so I don't think I will be bringing any more into the house. I'll have to put a vase in the conservatory and watch out for the beetles.

Nice little harvest after two days away.

  1. It's amazing how they all come on once your back is turned, isn't it? Welcome home.
