All change in the garden.

Today my friends called in to take me 'bargain food shopping' and brought me some more reindeer poo. In the back of the van was this dismantled water butt which they were taking to the tip. It's in two pieces, one of which is the base of the water butt.  As soon as I saw it I knew I could put it to good use.

Tony has drilled holes in it for me and I planted it up with spring flowering bulbs after reading Adrian Bloom say that we should plant for as much colour as possible during the cold dark months. I filled the smaller piece with crocus, Anemones de Caen and a summer bulb called 'Honeybells'. The Honeybells are described as being fragrant and I know that they are loved by bees.

I had to move things around in the garden to make room for them but the bird bath looks really nice in it's new position on the little flower bed. The bigger part of the water butt will make another raised planter for me to grow more lovely veggies and when the spring bulbs die down I'll plant some shallow rooted veggies on top of them.  I need to top it up with a bit more compost tomorrow.

  1. I don't think we ever stop changing things in a garden, do we? There's always something else, some change, some new idea.

  2. I like to go crazy with early spring bulbs. They really do lighten up the days. Lucky find on the water butt Cherie. Makes me want to hang shiftily around at skips a little more. Aren't those Honeybells lovely! Lulu x
