Yesterday I harvested three red cabbages and just chucked the whole lot on the compost bin. They were riddled with big fat slugs and earthworms. I got the shock of my life when I started cutting into it to clean it up and worms ( not caterpillars) started dropping out. Yuck and bleurghhhhhh it really put me off eating them. I won't grow cabbages again as they don't make the best use of a small piece of land. It's far better for me to grow Kales and sprouts as I can pick off them for months on end. Earwigs and woodlice have been a flipping nuisance too. It's all well and good being organic but the losses can be pretty devastating.
I'm leaving a few radishes to go to seed in the hope we get a crop of seed pods. I've been reading that they are edible so it will be something different to add to salads. The weather was so nice yesterday and it was perfect gardening weather. I sowed two big tubs of carrots and popped them into the cold frame up on top of the wood store. I'm hoping to get enough carrots for our Christmas dinner even if they are small. Also sowed spinach. pak choi and lettuce into modules. They are all enjoying the shelter of the cold frame and as they germinate and space becomes available I will find places in the garden for them.
Oh, what a shame. It would totally put me off too, yucky things. I appreciate worms in the soil but certainly not in my veg. xx
ReplyDeleteI got the shock of my life as there were so many of the revolting little things.
DeleteWhat a shame indeed. I am not a big cabbage fan really, though I do prefer the red type. How dare those slugs. Who do they think they are?!? x
