The chilli, melon and red pepper seeds that I planted the other week are sprouting nicely and as soon as the bitterly cold weather changes I will put them into my porch on the sunnier days. It's very light and gets very warm in there so with a bit of luck they won't get too leggy. I want to see if they will grow in the garden at the front of the house. It's a proper little suntrap there and gets really very warm from about March onward unless the weather turns cold. By May it should be hot enough in the garden to put them outdoors. I've never grown melons before so it's just a bit of an experiment to see if anything will grow.as I am trying to use as much growing space as possible for food production.

Just a suggestion, but plan on trellising your melons (cucumbers, squash) up. With a small space they just take up too much space. We sling our veggies as they get heavy, on fences with wire going up them. And, here in US Chicagoland it is too early to start those plants as they grow so fast. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandi. I've never grown them before so am grateful for any hints and tips.
DeleteNice sprouts Cherie. I sowed chilies back in January, but you have just reminded me that I forgot to do the peppers! I'd better crack on with that. Think it may be a weekend of indoor sowing, judging by the torrent of rain outside :0 Do you sow yours in a potting shed or kitchen? Lulu x
