While out shopping today I picked up a gooseberry and another raspberry plant. They have now been planted down in the raised beds under the fruit cage though I don't expect to see any fruit on them this year. It's nice making plans for the long term knowing that each year will (hopefully) bring bigger yields. Yesterday my neighbour was giving her garden it's first trim of the year so I asked if I could have the grass cuttings. I have put them into a couple of tubs and the extra raised bed and given them a thorough wetting before topping them off with newspaper and some shop bought compost. This time next year it will have decomposed nicely and will be great for planting veggies. The carrots that I sowed in tubs on top of the wood store two weeks ago are showing signs of sprouting so they will be a welcome treat later in the year. Nothing beats the taste of a fresh picked home grown carrot. The weather has turned really cold though so growth is likely to slow down until temperatures start to pick up again.

Oh I love a big bag of grass cuttings. I always ask for my neighbour's, as it is great for smothering the weeds at the bottoms of the garden. Every autumn, my dad, bless him, bags up a load of leaves for me as well. I can't think of a better treat! Those carrots have moved quickly. Have a great weekend Cherie. Lulu x
ReplyDeleteTony and I like to gather many bin liners filed with leaves in the Autumn. They rot down and make a smashing mulch
